In light of the recent Supreme Court decision on gay marriage, it is urgent that Christians and churches respond. Please see my response by viewing this sermon preached on June 28, 2015.
Proof of Life
Many years ago I watched a movie where the main character was kidnapped and a ransom demanded from his family. The first thing the family asked for was “proof of life”, something to show that the person they were sending the ransom for was actually alive.
I’ve thought a lot about that concept while serving in churches. I have seen times that churches seem like the zombies that our culture is obsessed with: they walk and move but are not really alive. Every church that seeks to follow Jesus needs to show “proof of life”.
I am so excited to tell you that North Rockdale has “proof of life”. I have been blessed to watch this week as life was evident in so many ways. Let me share a few of them:
1. Our sanctuary right now is full of VBS decorations that are ready to be put up.
2. Our playground equipment has been repaired and repainted and looks better than new.
3. A team of people setup a history wall that celebrates God’s goodness to us in the past as we seek His blessings for our future. 4. The house that once served as the office and has been vacant for 2 years now has a working HVAC system and has been thoroughly cleaned and prepped to house our student ministry. Painting and new flooring are on the way.
All of these things are signs of life for a church. They are ways we are preparing to welcome and minister to our community. Now we need to reach out to those in our community and invite, encourage and bring them in to experience the true source of life, which is Jesus.
